NLP and Sports Psychology

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Recently I was contacted by someone looking for some help for his son using sports psychology. His son James (name changed for confidentiality reasons) was a 12 year old moto cross rider, who was in the top 10 in England. Last year he was at the top of his age group, and was very much full of confidence and enjoying his riding.

However at the end of the year it was time for James move up to the next category, the 12 – 16 year old age group, where he was now riding against older, more experienced, bigger and stronger riders. Even taking all this into account, James’ lap times in practice and training were quicker than most of these other riders, so he should have been brimming with confidence, and in practice he was!

However, come race day there was a huge shift in James’ mindset. He became nervous, anxious, worrying that all the other riders were quicker and faster (even though consciously he knew they weren’t), and seemed to resign himself to losing against a select few, even to the point where he would let the bigger names ride off in front of him and just stick himself in with the safer group, where he would be able to beat some people.

So how did I help? Well, to start with I focused on getting him into his training mindset, where he excelled and was confident in his own ability, and where he ALWAYS enjoyed riding his bike. I then used lots of anchoring techniques so that we could reprogram how his mind saw race days, and that would allow him to take this confident training mindset into race days.

There was also lots of generating new behaviours, finding ways for James to instantly change his state, into a state of confidence and relaxation.

So how did it help? I spoke with James’ father the week after who said the change was immense. Even on the way down to the venue for the weekend James seemed so much more relaxed. He slept better the night before, and when walking the track before qualifying James was seen laughing with his friends. During the second race, James had a problem with his bike that made is go slow and lose power, something that beforehand would have made him give up. This time however, he took it all in his stride, focused and just got on with the job in hand.

Cambridge Hypnotherapy ~ A driving Success

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Sometimes we, that’s me and you, forget how important changes we make or have made in our life are.
I was reminded of this just the other day when I received this via email of thanks.
Hi Paul, - Just to let you know that I passed my test. I was so relaxed about it all that I couldn’t believe that it was really me. It’s taken me 11 years of lessons and 10 failed tests, so I can’t thank you enough. It really has been the only thing I wanted in my life which I had never managed to achieve; so aside from the driving itself, it means a lot to me. I’ll give my instructor your details in case he comes across any other nervous drivers.” - EJ (Cambridge)

We believe here at Cambridge Hypnotherapy any change is possible if you really want it and are prepared to do whatever it takes. We find, with our clients, when you have these two things you will find a way and it’s easier than you can imagine.

Maybe it’s time to take the time to review our successes and remember how it/they felt
and
When you feel the way all your successes feel inside and holding on to that feeling begin to think of the things you want to change. I think you might just feel different about achieving them now. (Oops. I think I dropped in a little NLP technique there!)

Enjoy your every heart beat

Paul

Can Hypnosis do Anything?????

Monday, May 11th, 2009

We seem to be intrigued about hypnosis and the power of hypnosis.

What is it? What can it do?

And this question - can it so anything?

And even that question can be seen as meaning different things

to those who ask it.

To some people anything may mean nothing and to others it may mean everything. I guess it depends on you. The meaning of the question and the answer you’re looking for, listening for.

Hypnosis isn’t a thing, it isn’t something you can hold or touch, is it? If you were to ask me there are a couple of answers that come to mind.

Hypnosis, that is the process of hypnosis, can create wonderful changes in ourselves and others and usually, in my experience, far greater than we could ever imagine. I’ll talk about that in a minute.

The second thing that comes to mind is that we are consciously unaware of the power of our unconscious mind and it’s with hypnosis that this, our, infinite potential can be realised and experienced.

So can hypnosis do anything/everything? I believe we can, (yes I meant we) and here’s the thing, that is the difference that makes the difference, intention and meaning - “what?” I’ll explain.

Intention- I’m referring to the intention of the hypnotist. If a hypnotist believes (I mean really believes) that change can and will occur then with that belief their intention will create the change. The client’s unconscious mind will tune in to this and providing the positive intention of the issue/disease is honoured change will happen.

And then there’s …..

Meaning- Does the change have meaning to the person being hypnotised?

Do they really want it for themselves? If they got it now would ‘juice’ them? And even if they can’t at the moment imagine having the change (some people can’t because they have had the problem so long) if they dared to think how it would be having changed would it be something they want?

If the change is not something the client wants to have happen or is something that someone else wants for that person then why change?

So you may be thinking from all of this that hypnosis doesn’t do anything and it’s all to do with the hypnotist and the client and in part you’re right. To me these are the important ingredients for the process of hypnosis to create any change we desire.

To my mind, it really comes down to the fact that change and learning is made at unconscious level, whether it be emotional, behavioural or physical (healing) and the process of hypnosis works at the unconscious level. With the right ingredients I believe hypnosis can do anything and everything and that you have the infinite potential to have what you want or desire, to be or have it’s as simple as that.  I hope this gives you thought, a feeling that you want to explore, resonates something inside or that you can see an opportunity to consider that anything is possible when you enlist the help of your very best friend, the friend that is always with you (night and day), that only wants the best for you – that’s right – your unconscious mind.

sometimes two sessions

Initially sceptical, I was immediately put at ease by the highly professional and informative approach from Paul at Cambridge Hypnotherapy. The consultation offered a great opportunity to find out more and I can honestly say that I have never looked back. After 2 sessions I have not only overcome short term hurdles but identified a path for longer term fulfilment. If you are reading this then the only piece of advice I will give, is to make the call. I honestly do no think you will be disappointed. Many thanks for you help Paul, it has allowed me to consider so many other opportunities and for that I am truly grateful.”

and three sessions

“Having suffered from severe clinical depression for years & after
trying various things suggested by the hospital, my husband found
Paul’s web site. I am so glad he found it, after 3 sessions I have my life back,
I am excited about the future & actually feel happy.
A feeling I never thought I would feel again.
Thank you Paul, it is hard to believe now that a month ago I had no hope.
Now I can’t describe the joy that I feel. Thank you Paul. I had given up all hope of ever “living” again. You gave me back my life.
My husband keeps laughing & shaking his head as he can’t get over the change
of me being positive, getting excited & looking forward

.”

This is not to blow our trumpet, although I will admit that it’s really nice receiving great feedback ~ it’s really to let everone know there is always the opportunity to change your life to the way you want it. All you have to know is that you really want to change now. Not wish, not try or any other way except to really WANT to and do what ever it takes.

A thought about Fears and Phobias.

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Have you ever wondered, How many people who have a fear of heights ever fall from a tall building? That’s right, none. Some people think that fear is a wonderful emotion to have because of this. However, what about when just looking at a photo of a high building causes that fear, is that rational? No, it’s not is it? The same thing applies to all sorts of fears and phobias and they’re all real in for the people who experience this. This reaction is debilitating and can, when thrashing around with arms and legs, actually be more dangerous.

Having the unconscious ability to create the feeling of anxiety that we call fear, can be one of the greatest abilities we have, if it is in an acceptable scenario eg: if we are being attacked, or standing on the edge of a long drop and really this is the fight or flight that is ‘hard wired’ within each of us. On the other hand, if this fear becomes so big it becomes a phobia (where it becomes an irrational, intense and persistent fear that causes us to avoid certain situations) it can cause no end of problems for us.

We are born with the ability to feel fear, but when born we do not have certain beliefs about what to afraid of. Its’ only when we  go through an event that causes us to be afraid, our unconscious mind stores this memory in a way that the next time a similar event happens, it will cause us to feel fear so that we avoid the situation altogether. And whilst the unconscious mind is doing this for a marvellous reason or purpose it’s not learning from the previous time or your experiences in between. If it did you would be act so differently

Let’s look at the phobia of spiders (Aghhhhh…. sorry got carried away). How many times do you see babies playing with spiders and chasing them? It’s only when their parents pull them away quickly, screaming at the spider that we learn spiders are scary. In reality though, there are no dangerous spiders here in England so the fear is very irrational. It can even turn into a phobia where a toy spider can even cause this fear, or even just thinking about one causes the anxiety to return. When you think about it, we don’t learn to be frightened over a long period of time. We don’t think Oh there’s a spider there, I’ll be a little nervous and the next time think, Oh I’ll be a little more nervous now. No, we learn a phobia in an instant an that’s the great thing phobia’s teach us~ We have the amazing ability to learn new things unconsciously in an instant and therefore we can unlearn things we don’t want in an instant too and learn to act the way we want to in an instant. We can choose this and change at the unconscious level, how????????????? Using hypnosis of course (silly!)

So how can you let go of your phobias and choose to act the way we want to ? Why not just contact us at Cambridge Hypnotherapy and let us show you how easy it can be to become free of your fears and anxieties and learn to be the way you want in only 1-2 sessions? Really in only 1 or 2 sessions?????????? Yes really
