Effective weight loss vs The Hypnoband

A few weeks ago I had a phone call from a potential client wanting to book sessions for our hypnoband approach for weight loss. The obviously hadn’t ready my blog post here! They were completely surprised when I said I didn’t perform hypnoband sessions, and that personally I didn’t like it or believe in its effectiveness. Please don’t take this to mean that no-one will ever change as a result of it, as some people will. However, the percentage of positive LONG TERM results would be minimal in my opinion.

I’m not going to go over it all again as you can read my thoughts in the blog post above, but here are a few summarised points:

  • Is the client going to BELIEVE they have just had surgery with no scar…. NO
  • Are you letting go go emotional eating… NO
  • Does having a real gastric band fitted guarantee losing weight…. NO
  • Will a gastric band change my desire to exercise…NO
  • Is it any good at all…. NO (obviously only my opinion)

After raising just a few of these points to the enquirer, they quickly booked in for an initial consultation to discuss my approach to weight loss that means no conscious dieting, no real effort and a simple approach to achieve long term results. As it turned out, she had actually worked in clinics offering the real gastric band and had been against them but believed her original thoughts to be the only way to change!

After the first session, one week later, she had lost 4lbs and not had to actively go out and do anything differently. She had naturally found herself saying no to certain foods in certain situations, and had even been motivated to actually join a gym and have her induction already under her belt!

After the second session, only 2 weeks after starting , she was 7 lbs down. The most shocking thing to there was how easy it had been. She imagined having to eradicate every type of food she liked, count calories and try and lump foods into certain point schemes to work out what she could eat! how much grief and effort would that have been!

So what’s stopping you from easily losing weight? Why not contact me here, or call me on 01223 720 120 find out more about being the slimmer you that so far you’ve have only imagined and dreamed of being!

Performance Anxiety

Performance Anxiety and how it affects us.

Where do we start with performance anxiety! This area is so big and covers so many different issues. Here is a list of a few:

  • Exam performance
  • Sporting performance
  • Interview performance
  • Speaking to groups
  • Artistic performance (singing, acting etc)
  • ?
  • ?
  • ?

The questions marks are for your issue that I haven’t mentioned. In each and every one of the examples above the only thing stopping that person from performing the way that they want to is their perception of what that event means. We could take a mock exam paper home and sit quietly at a table and no doubt answer questions calmly and get the score we deserve. However when put in an exam situation, a great big hall where you are not allowed to talk, surrounded by 50 other nervous individuals we start to read too much into it. There is now also something riding on our results. They mean something compared to a mock exam where it doesn’t matter if we fail… but you didn’t… you passed it… why should this be any different?

Or then there is sporting events. I have worked with professional sportsmen and women from footballers to golfers to snooker players. One of the snooker players I worked with was an amateur who had already achieved one of the highest breaks ever at 151 (possible as his opponent had fouled). He had all the talent and skill and was winning his amateur competitions with ease. However when it came to the tournaments where he could win his pro card it was a different scenario. He was rarely winning and actually losing to people he’d previously never lost to. When asked why, he said he kept thinking about how if he lost then his chance would be gone, where as there was nothing riding on his amateur matches apart from some small prize money.

These really highlight how our levels of anxiety can actually be working against the very thing it is trying to achieve. Anxiety is there to protect us and to help us perform our best, and to a degree this works. The issue is when this anxiety goes above the optimal level and our performance starts to drop. See the graph below to demonstrate this.

Think about your life. What would you do better, more efficiently and more enjoyably if you were remained relaxed and calm? We can help you. Anxiety is the number one thing we work with at Cambridge Hypnotherapy. Over 50% of our clients are here for some sort of anxiety issue. In only 2-3 sessions you too can be free just like they now are.

Can’t vs Won’t

Friday, June 2nd, 2017

What, or who, is stopping you?

How often do you look at something and say “I can’t do that”? More often than you’d care to admit would be my guess, am I right?

The old cliché is that there is no such word as can’t, to which I honestly believe has some truth to it. Obviously there are some things we can’t do… for instance I can’t run 100m in less than 10 secs (less than 30 secs may even be debatable these days!!!). No matter how much positive thinking I do, that will always remain something I can’t do.

But then there are those other things that we simply perceive we can’t do. For example:

“I can’t stop drinking once I’ve started…”

“I can’t leave food on the plate…”

“I can’t stop the anxiety from taking over me…”

“I can’t talk in front of groups of people without falling apart…”

Ultimately in every one of those examples above there is only one thing, or person for that matter, stopping them from being able to and that is the individuals themselves! To be even more to the point, each and every one of those statmements is in a excuse as to why someone isn’t living the way they want to. Who else is making them carry on drinking, or force feeding them food, or physically restraining them from talking to groups of people?

If we are in control of these limiting behaviours, why don’t we just change them and start behaving differently? I know it sounds too easy right? But, when you think about it, what is ACTUALLY stopping you? At Cambridge Hypnotherapy our aim is to remove those limiting beliefs easily and effortlessly. In typically no more than 3 sessions (many achieve their results in even less) you too could be regaining the unconscious controls and living your life exactly how you determine, not letting these little beliefs (excuses maybe?) get in the way.

Contact us here or call us on 01223 720 120 and we can talk you through how quickly you can change.

Quick results with with Cambridge Hypnotherapy

So how many sessions should hypnotherapy actually take?

I regularly get asked one question relating to something that we state on our website, and that is “how can you help people in only 3 sessions?”. I think one of the biggest problema is that so many people have tried counselling or other routes where sometimes they attend regularly for months after month after month, if not years!

For the life of me I cannot understand why any change should take that long, it sounds absolutely crazy to me! I think one of the only reasons that people think change should take this long is that they are told that is how long it may take. They start to limit their change in accordance with that belief, and how could they possibly be feeling amazing again in only 2 weeks when they still have another 6 months of sessions booked in???

Our genuine belief at Cambridge Hypnotherapy is the fewer the better. I never tell any client how many sessions they need, more that they are in control and they are the only limit to how quickly they can change.

Over the past 11 years of being a full time hypnotherapist, I believe I have honed my approach to be the most systematic and effective way possible. To start with, more often than not we don’t work on what the original enquiry was all about. Most of the time the original enquiry was a symptom, and the reason the client knew they had an issue in their life. Take alcohol consumption for example. It’s probably in the top 3 most common issues people enquire into, yet rarely have I worked on alcohol itself. There is a reason why people drink and that is what we want to address. If the reason changes, the alcohol consumption disappears. If the reason remains, then the alcohol consumption increases back to where it was after a few months or maybe even weeks.

No matter what the issue is from increasing confidence, letting go of anxiety, losing weight or even being free from depression, it is rare that we work with clients for more than 3 sessions. Occasionally a client may come back for a 4th session, however some clients achieve everything they want to in only 2 sessions.

As with anything in life, there is no guarantee that everyone will change with hypnotherapy, however it is rare we get someone go away without achieving their results. In that rarity though it just pushes me harder to find out a reason so that we ensure future clients continue to benefit.

If you would like to find out how you can be free of any of the issues above, or any other issues listed here the please don’t hesitate to contact us.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Hypnotherapy for cocaine addiction

Letting go of cocaine addictions

A few weeks ago I received an enquiry from someone looking to change his behaviour when it came to cocaine taking. According to him, when he split up with a long term partner over 8 years ago, he turned to alcohol mainly to help deal with the breakup and escape from the emotional trauma that came alongside it. To a degree, no doubt it worked at that particular time as he would get so drunk he would forget everything, pass out and have nothing to think about…. Until he awoke anyway!

After a lot of work he managed to get a hold of his drinking and curb it, to the point where if he went out and noticed he had consumed 2-3 drinks he would take himself away from the situation and go home, as he didn’t like to lose control like that anymore. The problem with that though was that when he got home he still needed to deal with his emotions, and he started to slowly increase his cocaine consumption. From only doing it no more than once a month, it became once a week, to the point where he was then going and buying more on a daily basis. He had even found himself purposely going out to the pub to have a few drinks just so he could do some more.

It was time for a change……

During our first session we quickly highlighted the root of his behaviours. Now this doesn’t mean it was anything deep or dark, more so the one thing that when disconnected would allow of all his behaviours to change. Using NLP and hypnosis together we quickly learned the levels of conflict going on when it came to behaviour v intention and allowed them to realign.

At our second session, we used TimeLine Therapy to go back and release the learnings from his past. This meant that he could learn everything from the first event in his past that would allow him to live his future with a different choice and future behaviours.

By only the 3rd session he hadn’t taken any cocaine, or thought about taking cocaine even when being around it. In his mind, he was free form his cocaine addiction.

That was it! 3 sessions and he was free from his old behaviours. I spoke to him a few days ago after about 6 weeks and he was still enjoying life and making all of the right choices on an unconscious level where he didn’t even need to think about it.

What would you like to change that quickly? Why not contact us here and I’ll show you how we can do it!

How long to let go of bad emotions ~Cambridge Hypnotherapy

Clearing negative emotions with NLP, Time Line Therapy(TM) and Hypnosis

I am continually amazed how long we (that’s all of us) can hold onto old negative emotions. Hold on to them even when we think they’re gone. How do I know this? I’ll tell you in a minute.

The thing is these negative emotions continue to affect our quality of life and the decisions we make. Like a snow ball, they start of very small and as life rolls on they get bigger and bigger and for some then it’s just overwhelm.

So how do I know this? Time Line Therapy™ that’s how. Now this probably makes no sense to you at all, unless you know about TLT.

So let’s make a little sense out of this. When working with a client who is suffering from anxiety, which is really fear of what has happened in the past will repeat in the future, we may use Time Line Therapy ™ processes.

A typical session would also include dealing with anger and sadness and although nearly every clients says well I’m not really an angry or sad person, when we look a little deeper we find memories from years ago that still hold those emotions. Because the processes work so quickly, normally around 5-10 minutes for each emotion, we can really clear the entire unconscious blocks that were all part of the problem and different processes may not so cleanly achieve. That’s what and why I like Time Line Therapy™, it’s thorough, quick and my clients are always comfortable in the change process.

Just so you know why they remain comfortable ~ it’s because my clients never go to any negatively charged memory and relive it. I know some therapist have the client do this but I don’t agree with this and I won’t let my clients be anything other than comfortable when making changes. In fact all of here at Cambridge Hypnotherapy we all have the same philosophy to make change, whatever or however bad the initial feelings our clients are experiencing it isn’t necessary to feel bad when we let them go and we won’t let our clients re-experience what caused the problem, we know too many better ways to work with clients.

Here’s a little tester:

Think of a specific memory of anger that when you think of it you can rate that anger out of 10. 10 being totally angry and 0 being completely neutral.

Have you done that? If you have and it’s not a 0 then you’re carrying around anger and it will affect what and how you act or react to greater or lesser degrees. If you notice how long ago that memory was and it may be years then it is probably time to let it go.

A new project from one of my sons that has come to fruition

so please enjoy and allow a proud father a little indulgence

Rescover is Here

Wohoo! As of Tuesday, Rescover is now available in the App Store

If you don’t know already, Rescover lets you discover things you love, and reminds you when and where they come out.

You can follow TV Shows, Movies, Music, Games, Books etc. Rescover will then keep you in the loop with official release dates, descriptions, trailers and most importantly – remind you when it comes out.

We’re really happy with what we put together and we have lots of ideas for how to make it even better. We’re going to be working on those over the coming weeks.

Our main focuses now are 1/ get people to download it 2/ talk to them and get feedback 3/ make it better. Repeat ;-)

It’s starting to sink in that building the first version was the easy bit (well easier bit). Getting people to download it and like it is where the real work comes in!

On that note, I have a small favour to ask. I’d love it if you could give it a whirl and let me know what you think. And if you like it, please let others know in any way you can. Every little bit is a great help!

Stoptober is nearly upon us!

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014

So it’s coming up to that time of year again, Stoptober! A month where smokers decide to stop smoking for 28 consecutive days, with the aim of staying a non smoker at the end of the challenge!

Apparently the Stoptober national campaign claims that if you stop smoking for a period of 28 days then you are 5 times more likely to remain a non smoker than someone who decides to just quit. Personally I think we would all have to agree that if you stopped doing something, or for that matter even started doing something for 4 weeks then you would find it easier to maintain this new behaviour than if you stuck to it for just a few days. For example, someone that simply stopped going to the pub on their way home from work every day for a month would start to not even think about stopping off… their new routine would simply be get in the car, arrive home. I know that when I have wanted to start hitting the gym more regularly, once I have been training and stuck to my plan for a few weeks then this becomes my new habit/routine and I start to feel bad, disappointed, and even annoyed/angry if I have to miss a workout for whatever reason.

Because of these factors, I think Stoptober CAN be a good programme, but only if used in the right way. For those that want to see it as a way to make it easier to stay a non smoker then GREAT, do it and I wish you every bit of success with it. However, where it falls down in my eyes is for those that see it as a challenge knowing that in 28 days they will be able to start smoking again. I think we all know of someone who has fasted before or stuck to an 8 week bootcamp/diet routine, and they are counting down the days until they can eat a nice big bar of chocolate again. Those people are the ones that I feel will be taking the Stoptober challenge each year, whereas in theory you should only ever need to take this challenge ONCE in your life!

So, lets say no to Stoptober but yes to StopForever, seems like a much better plan of action to me 🙂

Hypnotherapy and Sports Psychology

Sunday, June 29th, 2014

Over the past couple of years we at Cambridge Hypnotherapy developed a sister site called Cambridge Sports Psychology. We were getting lots of enquiries from sportsmen and women who knew that they were not achieving their potential and that their results were not being equalled by their talent and ability.

We have worked with pretty much any sport that you could think of including rugby, football, boxing, mma, showjumping, golf, shooting, snooker, archery, motocross and many many more. We have used our set of skills with clients ranging from hobbyists all the way through to professional and international sportspeople.

When it comes to performing, you can have all the talent in the world…. if you don’t have the correct mindset then the chances are high that you will never achieve the success that you are deserving of. There are countless examples of professional sportspeople who are some of, if not the very best in their field. However there are times in their careers that they simply cannot bring all of their skills and talents into play, including the following examples:

  • Tiger woods – Arguably the greatest ever golfer yet when he was going through his personal troubles his performances were nowhere no matching his ability
  • Fernando Torres – Signed for £50million after being world class at Madrid and Liverpool, yet a drop in form and confidence, as well as the burden of the price tag has led to      unbelievably below par performances.
  • Gareth Bale – Presently the worlds most expensive player but he started his Tottenham career with the jinxed reputation of being on the losing side in the first 24 games he played in leaving his performances lacking in confidence.
  • England cricket team – being one of the best in the world yet being whitewashed in Australia as the fear/anxiety became too much for them.

Now that Wimbledon has begun we have already seen an increase in tennis related enquiries as the sport is bought back into the public eye for another year.

No matter what sport you play, or the level that you play at, we at Cambridge Sports Psychology can help improve your performance, let go of any performance related anxiety, and most importantly of all get you to ENJOY your sport again.

Call us now on 01223 720 120, or click here to visit our website to find out more about the services that we offer.

Hypnobirthing in Cambridge site soon to go live…..

Tuesday, June 24th, 2014

Hypnobirthing in Cambridge site is soon to go live!

Over the next few weeks we’ll be putting the finishing touches to our new website offering a fantastic service known as hypnobirthing, called Hypnobirthing in Cambridge.

Hypnobirthing in its main form is a way to help expectant mothers give birth to their child in a more comfortable way by teaching them breathing techniques etc. This can obviously have a very positive influence on people, however I had one particular concern with it, as i do with all coping strategies. The problem with them is that if you are learning a coping strategy, then surely that implies you still have a problem that you having to cope with?

Our system takes it a step further and more advanced than this. We allow you to change on an unconscious level so that instead of having to breath deeply etc to deal with the panic and anxiety, your mind automatically thinks completely different about the event. This means that instead of having to put effort in to deal with the fear, it simply doesn’t manifest in the first place.

We use advanced and refined techniques within NLP, deep levels of hypnosis as well as Time Line Therapy to allow you to make these changes in as short a time as possible. Our plan consists of only 3 sessions. These will deal with the following areas:

  • Prenatal: Letting go of any of the anxiety about what lies ahead, feeling positive and being able to enjoy your pregnancy
  • The birth: Allowing you to experience a comfortable pain free birthing experience in as short a time as possible
  • Postnatal: Enjoying your new arrival, letting go of the anxiety about whether they and you are doing everything ok, and allowing your body to heal quickly.

If you would like to find out more prior to our launch, you can contact us by clicking here, or calling us on 01223 720 120. We offer all of our clients a complimentary initial consultation where you can meet us and be sure that this is the best thing you could do for yourselves.

Thanks for reading, and I’ll speak with you soon!
