So why do so many people suffer from fear of heights? It's pretty simple really ~ Fear is necessary to protect the body from various threats and your unconscious mind is trying to protect you. But there is a difference between biological fear which is a protective mechanism of fight or flight and one supported by a phobia, which is purely a psychological fear. It is these inappropriate fears or phobias that hinder the regular and normal life of a person. Many of the phobias are completely baseless and irrational. This fear is known as Acrophobia and is an extreme or irrational fear of heights. It belongs to a category of specific phobias, called space and motion discomfort. This is known to be one of the most common fears of all the phobias. Although this phobia or fear protects you from falling it is the way it protects you that is the problem. If this fear in the normal person crosses a limit and turns out to be a phobia then it has to be corrected to an appropriate response. When a person is standing on a height there is a small feeling of anxiety and that's normal. This anxiety in the person suffering with a phobia quickly turns into a panic attack, increasing the heart rate to the point the whole body almost trembles. Some people can also get sweaty and can even faint.
Overcoming the fear of height

Here's some tips on helping yourself
Whenever you feel the fear, take a deep breath and continue to breathe deeply and slowly. This will lower your heart rate and pumps more oxygen in the body. Stay relaxed and make yourself calm.
Learn self hypnosis as this will help in reducing the tension. Listen to some relaxing music.
Express your fears openly to your loved ones and seek their support. Ask for their cooperation and request them to accompany you whenever you climb a height. Their support goes a long way in boosting your confidence and comfort levels.
Slowly start exposing yourself to small heights and graduate to bigger heights. This helps you to accustom to the situation and thereby help you lose the fear. Look out of your window and go on to the terrace and feel the height with a bit of alertness. Observe your feelings and behavior. Slowly look below and find yourself fearless.
This way you can overcome your fear of heights and become normal. This helps you a lot in leading a better life.
